A Constructive Critique of Developmental Psychology
Despite its extraordinary power to make sense of our current cultural situation, integral philosophy remains relatively marginal and obscure. As Steve McIntosh argues, this is because conventional integral philosophy includes forms of “accepted wisdom” that are evidently untrue or otherwise incomplete.
In this first of a series of constructive critiques of integral philosophy, Steve will examine the blind spots of developmental psychology. By failing to accurately recognize the influence of cultural consciousness on people’s minds, developmental psychology conflates the evolution of individual consciousness with the evolution of collective culture. As he contends, the relative development of a person’s individual consciousness cannot be smoothly equated with the worldview structure that provides their cultural identity.
